All about...

Me

Hello, I'm Kirsty! I'm a 40 something mum of a very energetic little boy and partner of a much bigger bearded, kiwi boy and we all live in a sleepy wee village in Midlothian. I've been a teacher for over 20 years but after my little one was born it was time for a change of scene and to try something different. So when he was just over a year old, Little Hands Ceramics was born. That was back in 2019. Obviously the COVID years were difficult and during that time I returned to teaching, but part time. So now I split my week between school and the workshop.

My favourite place to go is the beach and I love spending time there in all weathers. I try to take a dip as often as I can!

The Process

  • During the appointment I'll gently press the hand or foot into the clay making sure to press down each little finger or toe

  • I'll then wipe away any unwanted marks to leave a nice smooth surface around the imprint and add stampers and embellishments if needed

  • It will then dry for between 3-7 days

  • When it's fully dry it will go in the kiln for a full 24 hours and bake at over 1000 degrees

  • It's then time for me to add colour with the glazes and then add a clear coat of glaze.

  • It's then ready for it's 2nd firing in the kiln, another 24 hours

  • Once it's out I add colour coordinated ribbon, or frame them and then pack them up (in colour coordinated tissue paper if I have it too!)

  • I'll then send you a text to let you know your order is ready and you can collect it at any time from the collection box by my front door.

The Workshop

My workshop is located at the bottom of my garden. It's a snug little place with just enough room for a small family. The garden is large and children are free to explore but it is unfenced.
